From Staff Reports
CANTON – The Starkville Yellow Jackets clinched first place in Class 5A, Region 3, District 4 and a first-round bye in the postseason with a pair of easy victories at Canton on Thursday afternoon.
Starkville improved its records to 16-9 overall and 7-2 in the division with 15-0 and 18-0 wins.
In the second game, pitcher Nick Brooks nearly tossed a perfect game for the Jackets in three innings with a walk keeping him from accomplishing the feat. He did finish with a no-hitter.
Offensively for SHS, Victor Johnson had a triple, while Nathan Pugh and Daniel Murphree added a single and double each.
The Jackets scored six runs in the second inning and broke the game open with a 10-run third.
Pugh was the winning hurler in the first game and only gave up one hit. He had eight strikeouts.
Starkville exploded for seven runs in the first inning and six more in the fourth. It only had six hits, but benefitted from several walks from the Canton pitching staff.
The Jackets now wait on the winner between the first-round Class 5A playoff series between Center Hill and Jackson Lanier.
Starkville hosts the first game of the second round on April 28, then travels the next day and a third game, if necessary, returns to SHS on the following Monday.

Jr Jackets Win Big 8 Championship!
The Jr. High Yellow Jackets won the Big-8 Championship tournament Saturday. The three game tourney began with a playoff game on Thursday, followed by a semi-final and final games on Saturday. The semi and final games were held at Columbus High School.
Thursday, the Jr. Jackets hosted the West Point Green Wave and won 5-3. The Jacket’s starting pitcher gave up no runs and only 2 hits. The Jacket’s 5 runs came on 6 hits.
The first game Saturday was a semi-final match-up between Kosciusko and Starkville. The two teams split the regular season contests, winning 1 apiece. Starkville won Saturday’s game, 5-4 in the bottom of the 5th inning. With bases loaded and infield playing in, a short fly ball just beyond second base allowed the runner on third to score to end the game.
Saturday’s final game was also a match-up that Starkville had split with earlier in the season – Neshoba Central Jr. Rockets. In another battle in the bottom of the 5th, the Jr. Jackets dug down and scored in the final frame to win it 7-6. In the final frame, the first batter reached on a hit by pitch. Then a great sacrifice bunt moved the runner to 2nd. A very hard ball to third base advanced the possible winning run to third. With runners on the corners and only 1 out, Neshoba chose to intentionally walk the forth batter of the frame. Coach Ron Campbell then signaled the batter to bunt, however, the first pitch was in the dirt and escaped the catcher allowing the winning run to score on the passed ball.
The Jr. High Yellow Jackets finished the season with a record of 10 wins and 2 losses and brought home the Big 8 Championship. The Jr. Jackets would like to extend appreciation to the coaching staff of Ron Campbell, Carlos Kemp and Graduate Assistant Luke Ivy for their dedication throughout the season splitting time with the Varsity, Jr. Varsity as well as the Jr. High teams – Thanks, coaches!
Varsity Split Saturday Match-ups
The Yellow Jackets split a pair of non-divisional match-ups at Water Valley on Saturday. Water Valley won the opening game, 4-3.
South Panola was opponent for the second game of the day for the Jackets. Apparently, this game was a hitter’s delight as the Jackets won 25-23.
Jr. Jackets Sting Jr. Green Wave
The Jr. Jackets clinched a spot in Saturday’s End of Year Tournament by defeating the West Point Green Wave by a score of 5-3. Supurb pitching and fielding held the Wave scoreless through the first 4 innings of play.
The Jackets scored 2 runs in the first on an error and a couple of hits. The 2nd and 3rd innings were scoreless, but did yeild a couple of good hits. The bottom of the 4th yeilded 3 runs on 2 hits, a walk, and an error to finish up the scoring.
The Jackets committed 2 errors in top of the 5th allowing the first 2 batters to reach which accounted 2 of their 3 runs. The 3rd run came on a solid hit to reach and another hit to score him. With Wave runners at the corners, 2 outs, and the go-ahead run at the plate, the runner at first thought he had an easy steal to second, however, the Jackets were prepared and pitcher stepped off the rubber, took a couple of steps towards the runner, then tossed the ball to the 2nd baseman to make an easy tag to end the game.
The Jr. Jackets travel to Columbus for a possibility of two games, winner take all. Game times are currently unknown.
On the Road Again
The Jackets travel to Tupelo today for a rematch with the Golden Wave at High Noon followed by this season’s first match up with the Houston Hilltoppers. The Jackets look to avenge last week’s 7-9 loss where they gave up 6 runs in the opening frame in last week’s contest.
As with every road trip as well as each game at YellowJacket Field, Devin Mitchell’s #25 jersey will watch over the dugout. Today, the jersey hangs proudly over his seat on the bus.
Good Luck today, Jackets!
Canton Game Postponed
Today’s district game in Canton has been postponed due to several days of rain in the Canton area. The field conditions will not allow play today. The game will be made up on April 17th as a double header to a previously scheduled district matchup.

Carlisle Field to honor high school coaching legend

By CARL SMITH

Starkville High School head baseball coach Danny Carlisle made a name for himself with numerous wins, division championships and state titles. Now, the field where Carlisle collected many of his wins will be named after the SHS legend.
The Starkville School District Board of Trustees voted to name the SHS baseball field after Carlisle, who is retiring as Yellowjackets skipper after this season.
SHS Athletic Director Stan Miller and other SHS baseball representatives approached the board Tuesday with the request to name the field after the district’s long-serving coach because of his on-the-field, financial and educational contributions.
Carlisle was recently honored for his 35 years of service to SSD and his 29 years of guiding Yellowjacket baseball.
“(The baseball stadium) is probably the best facility in SSD. Most of the funding was raised through private donations,” Miller said while speaking to the board about Carlisle’s impact.
